pertaining to successful shopping as well as wings

I've been working on the halloween costumes again... I don't remember if I've posted on costume number two, but if I have, you'll just have to sleep through the parts about it... anyway, the embroidery is going nicely (obviously, I had a lecture to listen to) and I finally have a purpose for embroidering it. More on that later; now:

I've been working on the wings more now. I tried boning them with my standard pockethoop boning. Very odd pics of me, I know...

the ends of the boning are tucked into my corset; I found that idea online! It worked quite nicely.

I then tried it with (what else?) coat hangers! Y'know, the wire kind? It worked a lot better, but notice the uneveness of height/angle...




Wow horrid pic of me. (I've been a bit ill, in fact did almost no homework today.) But the wings! I got the coat hangers to bend the correct ways for "takeoff." Bad pun I know.

The back. I'm wearing all modern things under the corset, so it will lace much tighter (and therefore hold the wings better, hopefully) when I wear the corset correctly.

...My mum, sister and I went shopping last weekend as well. The candy corn here is for cookies... we've since eaten a bag of it (hm, no wonder my emergency-before-halloween diet is not going so well...)

Also, we picked up a second pair of tights in case I run mine, orange eyeliner and lipstick (yay so fun to do makup strange!) and fake eyelashes with little plastic gems on them.

....And SHOES! Wonderful halloweenly victorian shoes! Aren't they gorgeous? I absolutely love them!

And fabric for my second costume, a victorian-inspired girly apron and bloomer set. It should be darling. (I've misplaced my drawing of the costume, or I'd post it. For now you'll just have to trust me it'll be lovely.)

A bit out-of-order, but we found black temporary hair spray (I didn't think we'd be able to find that!) and colored skin paint. I plan to use it for 18th century also, it looking to be the right colors.

Oh, and a witch hat.... this is getting to be a complicated costume. =P We actually this hat is for the little aproned costume.

My little brother and sis LOVE the hat; my mum advised me to hide it from them. =P

I was originally intending to use this ribbon for a necklace for the bat costume (can't get away from the 18th century, can I?!?) but it appeared too wide.

I decided on this one instead. It looks quite nice.

But, foolishly, I decided to bead-embroider a bit of the thick stuff, and when I tried the bead-embroidered on, it looked like it was choking me or something! It would be a better garter...

And, finally, you find out about my embroidery. I'm using it as the front piece of one side of my apron! Notice that it is fairly charted out in ink! I know, putting one pic at the beginning and the other at the end... but it made you read it, didn't it? Hehe it meant you saw my new adorable halloween shoes! =P

...And the halloween dress

Not much about the halloween dress... I need to figure out how to attach the wings... and I don't want straps under my arms. My brother suggested attaching them to my head... uh, no thanks. =P

I had an audio lecture to listen to, so the embroidery prospered. =D

The vampire bat/halloween costume (again)

She sews! Okay. So today in church (well highschool youth group for me) they announced that they'd be doing SOMETHING for the highschoolers for halloween, of course that made me think "I'll go just so I can wear a costume!" This costume, of course. It's really THE costume for halloween. So I got cracking tonight (before the weekend ends).

The peplum, just off the dress. It kinda got shaken as I took the other parts of the dress off to hem them, and I wanted pics.... The length that the peplum hangs is that fold line on the side; see it? I'm terrified to cut the peplum down yet, though, I need a fitting first, with my corset and everything.

My mum found my missing spiderweb fabric, yay, it was hidden in the family room.... note kid toy.

Here's the tag that's been on my wing pannels so I won't get them mixed up with my other fabric. (I can sense people saying "What? Wing pannels? She never said anything about wing pannels!")

The short little chemise I'm not going to wear, in favor of a standard black cami! Because a cami is so much more practical!

The wig should work quite nicely, I think, once I style it with fabric scraps and riboon. And maybe a haircut. Oh and curlers and gel and aquanet..... hehe

Actually the wig is quite small and managable WHEN it is in a net.

So my next part was wings! I was planning to use orange and black ribbons to tie the wings onto my arms, but didn't want to cut into my ribbon yet unless it turned out wrong. I messed around for a while, trying to figure out what to do for practice, when I went "Right! Hair ribbons! And they're in my bathroom, which has a nice big mirror for pictures!" When I used to have long hair, I had to cut my ribbons quite long, so some of them were long enough to tie around my arms.

....So I pinned the ribbons onto the fabric, and this is what I came up with. Dorky pics, sorry, but they give the main idea. I'll have to give the wings a bat-wing-cut around the edges, rather than this rectangle.

They lift quite nicely though, if I do this for the real wings, I'll have to attach another teeny ribbon at the top of the fabric to tie around my pointer finger, to keep the fabric in the right shape. You can see here that I'm just holding it up.

And lower down. Note messy counters. My only (current) complaints about the wings are that the top ribbon is slipping off my shoulder (that will be annoying to fix over the course of the night) and that the whole thing makes my arms look really wide. Not nice.

Here's the tie around the wrist. No, it won't be pink with white butterflies in the final.

And finally, because I thought it was so neat, some of my halloween ribbon, which I've worn in my hair in the month of october for a few years now. I like to receive weird looks for people at school/stores/ect. Maybe that's why I don't have many friends....
