Wig-stying and the halloween dress

Not much to report on the costume... I styled my utterly plain wig, though, in some fashion that definately isn't victorian... I'm rather pleased with the results, though. Prepare yourself for nearly 10,000 pictures of my head (with wig, of course.)

I styled it last saturday at the kitchen table... note monkey, who I *attempted* to use as a styling head. It didn't work, so I tried a rabbit belonging to my sister... then I tried propping the rabbit up with the monkey (at this point, I got yelled at by the little sister, and laughed at by little brother's friend.)

Ta-da. Monkeys should not give rabbits piggy-back rides... This is what happens when there is 10,000 stuffed animals all over the house.

The back of the wig, admitst-styling. Doesn't look that great yet. Oh and FYI, the synthetic hair doesn't hold a curl. I tried. I think I should dunk each curl into boiling water to hold it...

And here's my setup for styling head which WORKED! Metal pumpkin on top of wood pumpkin. We have a lot of pumpkins around here at halloween.

Here's the wig, lookign much better! I later braided those little white ribbons in back into the hair in teeny little braids.

Me, wearing it. I take my own pictures, thus funky expressions and poorly-angled shots... Note black-and-white braid.

A rather-poor shot of the back. You can kinda see the general shape that I liked, though. Note family-tree poster from my spanish class.

For amusment's sake, you can see that I pulled the back into a pony while styling, and it got messed up big time...

A better shot of the back, and a rather poor one of my face....

Note that I've left my bangs out. It looked totally horrible to tuck them in, so I'll be dying them orange for halloween. (black or white would look better, but white would mean bleaching, and black would stay stained longer, and the dress code at my school doesn't allow for unnatural hair coloring.) Orange won't be *too* noticable because my hair is already strawberry. In fact my brother used to call me "Ginny" (Ron's little sister in Harry Potter) before I got my hair lopped off to under-chin-length.

The monkey wearing the wig! Hehe

...One of the scarcrows in front of our house wearing the wig.... Her name is Sweet Betsy from Pike (Yes, when she showed up I was in like 4th grade and using songs to learn my American history.)

The front of our house, which I hung lovely leaf-garlands around... no, the garland aren't long enough. I'm *trying* to use Betsy and Ike to hide that. Note monkey.

My dress. I attached ribbons to the hangings and apron to attach them to the dress with....

Ha. The dress again. Note metal pockethoop-boning, stockings, and sewing machine. The dress is getting a bit neglected because I've been busy, and a bit ill. I fell asleep while doing homework today, something I haven't ever done before, honest... but when I'm sick I get a whacked anyway....

The vampire bat/halloween costume (again)

She sews! Okay. So today in church (well highschool youth group for me) they announced that they'd be doing SOMETHING for the highschoolers for halloween, of course that made me think "I'll go just so I can wear a costume!" This costume, of course. It's really THE costume for halloween. So I got cracking tonight (before the weekend ends).

The peplum, just off the dress. It kinda got shaken as I took the other parts of the dress off to hem them, and I wanted pics.... The length that the peplum hangs is that fold line on the side; see it? I'm terrified to cut the peplum down yet, though, I need a fitting first, with my corset and everything.

My mum found my missing spiderweb fabric, yay, it was hidden in the family room.... note kid toy.

Here's the tag that's been on my wing pannels so I won't get them mixed up with my other fabric. (I can sense people saying "What? Wing pannels? She never said anything about wing pannels!")

The short little chemise I'm not going to wear, in favor of a standard black cami! Because a cami is so much more practical!

My skirt without all those hangings.

...And finally my wig on somebody! She works, right?!?!

See? What a cute widdle munkee.

The wig should work quite nicely, I think, once I style it with fabric scraps and riboon. And maybe a haircut. Oh and curlers and gel and aquanet..... hehe

Note knitting and exersise bike, the latter of which belongs to my mother.

Actually the wig is quite small and managable WHEN it is in a net.

So my next part was wings! I was planning to use orange and black ribbons to tie the wings onto my arms, but didn't want to cut into my ribbon yet unless it turned out wrong. I messed around for a while, trying to figure out what to do for practice, when I went "Right! Hair ribbons! And they're in my bathroom, which has a nice big mirror for pictures!" When I used to have long hair, I had to cut my ribbons quite long, so some of them were long enough to tie around my arms.

....So I pinned the ribbons onto the fabric, and this is what I came up with. Dorky pics, sorry, but they give the main idea. I'll have to give the wings a bat-wing-cut around the edges, rather than this rectangle.

They lift quite nicely though, if I do this for the real wings, I'll have to attach another teeny ribbon at the top of the fabric to tie around my pointer finger, to keep the fabric in the right shape. You can see here that I'm just holding it up.

The same.

And lower down. Note messy counters. My only (current) complaints about the wings are that the top ribbon is slipping off my shoulder (that will be annoying to fix over the course of the night) and that the whole thing makes my arms look really wide. Not nice.

Furthermore display of complaint 2, and my ribbons. Lovely butterflies....

Here's the tie around the wrist. No, it won't be pink with white butterflies in the final.

And finally, because I thought it was so neat, some of my halloween ribbon, which I've worn in my hair in the month of october for a few years now. I like to receive weird looks for people at school/stores/ect. Maybe that's why I don't have many friends....

various wigs...

The wigs for my 18th century "pouf" wig and my halloween wig arrived in the mail today. I have yet to style them. The halloween, which is a black wig with two white stripes in it, needs to be styled before halloween (in a offtake-victorian style, to match my dress!), and the 18th century pouf needs to be styled whenever I finish my robe a la francaise.

Why wigs?

My natural hair is chin-length, and that won't work too well for the majority of historical costuming. Or fantasy costuming. What fantasy people have short choppy bobs? hehe
